JAZZ BAND

The Lake Highlands High School Jazz Ensemble program began in 1992 and has since expanded to accommodate the enthusiastic Lake Highlands music community.  In 2000, the program was expanded to add more students through Jazz Ensemble 2.  Jazz Ensemble I is widely regarded as one of the premier jazz ensembles in the region, regularly leading the area in number of musicians selected to the All Region Jazz band.

The students who play in the High school’s Jazz I ensemble are selected by audition from the marching band and orchestra. Both Jazz I and Jazz 2 ensembles are directed by Mr. Mark Lara, Director of Jazz Studies at Lake Highlands High School.

The Jazz Band performs every spring in a special Evening of Jazz, a jazz club style event.  The other big event is our Mother's Day concert in Wildcat Stadium, Jazz Under the Stars.

Hello Jazzers!

This is my first email to the all new Lake Highlands High School Jazz Ensemble I. Welcome veterans and newcomers to the jazz family. Our first big event this year is Varsity Revue. This America’s-Got-Talent occasion showcases acts led by students throughout the entire student body as well as teacher sponsored groups like Cheerleaders, Highlandettes, and Wranglers. In addition to its outstanding substance, it serves as a band fundraiser that, if handled well, can bring in a healthy sum of revenue, benefitting every student in the band program. The shows are September 30th and October 2nd. Although I take on the job of directing it, I have an extremely important parent counterpart that organizes everything from ticket sales and programs to the parents that accomplish each task. This year, that parent is the greatness of Glen Stone. Glen and I will be leaning very much on help from parents within the jazz program to make this work. Here is the help we’ll be looking for:

·   Power Point – Use information given to you by Mr. Lara to create a clever slide for each act. This person will need to run it during each show.

·   Posters – Create a poster that will display the theme (a tribute to the 90s) through words and images, as well as all pertinent information. I want to work closely with this person because these posters will be the face of the show.

·   Ad Sales – The majority of revenue we get for this event has been through the ads that parents and local businesses buy, which are published in the program. Mr. Lara can take care of selling these to the students and their parents but help will be needed to campaign local businesses. Anyone and everyone can be involved with this.

·   Ticket Sales – We will need to set up tables and have man power at both the high school and freshman center at lunch the week of homecoming. We can get as creative as possible with this because this is our other huge source of income and really should be the majority. For example, we could spend one day that week at each of the junior highs and drum up more sales. We should also be able to advertise for online ticket sales with the help of Anita Siegers and Shellie Thompson, both of whom manage our website.

As with most things in life, each of these tasks can be as big or as small as we decide to make them and ultimately, our reward will match our efforts.

If you are interested in helping in any way, please let me know as soon as you can. Varsity Review will be here and gone before we know it. In fact, it is a full three weeks earlier than last year!

This show really is a huge highlight for the entire school during a festive homecoming week and we have the opportunity to make the band and jazz program shine brightly from a different angle.

Many Thanks!
